Bauci, David Fleck
The traveler directed toward Baucis cannot see the city and yet he has arrived. (...) Nothing of the city touches the earth except those long flamingo legs on which it rests and, when the days are sunny, a pierced, angular shadow that falls on the foliage.
Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities
The garden’s richness is the most important decorative feature of this space: scattered pots with different colours, trees and spontaneous plants, functional objects for the maintenance of the orchards, playground for kids and benches for adults, wooden platforms as meeting spaces and water tanks to collect the rainwater… Isola Pepe Verde is a biotope more than a community garden, where everything has a balance. Isola Pepe Verde is a complex and unique ecology that requires care and protection.
Bauci is not a project for a new garden; it’s a soft strategy for new relations inside it, placing sculptural objects that need to be defined and performed with the users customization. Bauci is a proposal to improve what is already there, not the discovery of a new order, but the rediscovery of the proven and elementary principles, not the construction of a new garden but the construction of new scenarios.
Our proposal is a collection of macchine inutili that potentially could have multiple use. Thin and light lines, floating in the garden that needs to be activated. New catalysts of functions and self-infrastructure elements for the reorganization of the open space, such as the cultivation of the plants or the creation of a meeting spot.
Bauci lines are simple devices that do not create additional volumes but define continuously new dynamic spaces, using and re-organizing the objects constellation around them. The garden is kept as a green background where the high level of flexibility lets the users define the new rules of the game, not only the playground but the whole space is an imaginary field.
The aim of our proposal is to intensify the existing possibilities of this place also by the differentiation and the optimization of the horizontal surfaces. Currently most of the garden is built on a homogeneous asphalt layer. The impermeable surface will be removed and replaced by a permeable water-bound surface, allowing a greater water drainage.
A new continuous ecological surfaces is interrupted just in two points: in the playground the hard surface is converted into a soft sandy pit where the children can jump safely and in the area of the café is realized with an inlay of wood planks, a new deck for tables and sittings. The green areas are maximized: the lawn next to the existing parking lots is enlarged till the limit along Via Pietro Borsieri, defining a new entrance from that side.
